In the early hours on June 29th 1864, Prussian forces carried out a surprise attack on the island of Als in the cover of darkness. From the northern tip of Kær peninsula, where they hit, and a few miles south to the city of Sønderborg, seven large beacons were set up as a warning system. Shortly after Prussian troops were pushing down on Kær that morning, the beacons were lit, and the south-western part of Als changed into a great sea of flames...
